No real matter what shape you decide on for a dining table, you should allow at least three feet between your table edge and an obstruction just like a server or wall. This gives sufficient space for people to move about the table, and in and out using their seats. On the other hand, more than six feet remaining between one wall or obstruction and the table means that the set is too small.
Dining areas come in all sizes and shapes, as do their accompanying tables. Since you browse dining area ideas, look at a few things. What's your dining room layout? How often do you entertain? How many people usually attend? What kind of events do you prefer organizing - big dinners or intimate gatherings? The type of dining rooms are you personally drawn to at other homes? In the event that you don't host anything because you are hindered by your present dining room design, consider what kind of soirees you'll ideally throw and work after that.
